Burnin and Lootin is a BBQ team out of Corona California. We started competing in 2012 and now can be found at most Southern California BBQ events.
The team is composed of Head Cook Jerry Aguilar and wife Lupe, and from time to time friends and family who make it out to help.
In 2005 Jerry fell in love with BBQ after seeing a show on TV about competition BBQ. Soon after watching that show Jerry went out to purchase his first smoker, an offset Bar-B-Chef offset smoker from Barbecues Galore.
The quality of BBQ progressed from bad to better through the years and in 2011 he felt he was ready to enter the world of competition BBQ. With the help from BBQ cooks Andy Soto (team Master of Disaster of Santa Ana, CA) and Adam & Sherry Hollman (team Huminie’s Hogalicious BBQ from Gilroy, CA) who took him under their respective tents at actual BBQ contests Jerry was primed to enter his first contest as a head cook of his very own team.
Burnin and Lootin entered into the end of the year event at Knott’s Berry Farm and surprisingly took a 1st place award for chicken and a 2nd place award for ribs. Burnin and Lootin went on to win the Best New Team of the Year (Rookie of the Year) in California for 2012. They also ended 2012 with two grand championships, many top category awards, 6th in the State overall for 2012, and 2nd place Ribs in the State for 2012.
Since their start in 2012, they have racked up hundreds of awards including Grand and Reserve Grand Championships in over 20 events. Their BBQ has earned multiple perfect scores from Kansas City BBQ Society Certified Judges. In 2016, Burnin and Lootin was selected to represent the state of California at BBQ’s most prestigious event, the Jack Daniel’s BBQ Invitational in Lynchburg Tennessee.
The team’s proudest moment was when their daughter Alyssa won her first Kids Q competition where she entered her now famous Burger Sliders. The KCBS certified judges that judged her entry loved it so much they gave Alyssa perfect scores, earning her a Perfect 180 pin (highly coveted in the BBQ world). Alyssa went on to win her next Kid’s Q as well.
The name Burnin and Lootin came from the love that the Aguilar family has for the music of Bob Marley. We knew that our new hobby had to include something from our roots and we named our BBQ team after one of our favorite Bob Marley songs. Even our logo is influenced by the cover of the classic Bob Marley album entitled Burnin’
